Dermatomyositis is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy with characteristic skin manifestations, including the heliotrope rash and Gottron¡¯s papule. The association between malignancy and dermatomyositis is well established, especially in elderly patients. However, the nature of the causal relationship underlying this association remains unknown. Cancer may occur before the onset of dermatomyositis, concurrently, or afterward. Lung, breast, ovary, gastrointestinal tract and lymphoproliferative disorders are the most frequently detected malignancies. However, the association between dermatomyositis and thyroid malignancy is uncommon, and there have been few descriptions of this association. We report an unusual case of dermatomyositis arising in a patient with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland. After the tumor had been resected, the patient¡¯s skin lesions and muscle weakness began to improve, and the serum levels of CPK, AST, and LD decreased. This case showed that the successful treatment of an underlying malignancy may lead to the resolution of dermatomyositis.(Korean J Med 73:S1090-S1094, 2007)
